Department Details

The Mission of the Department is to transform health care in India, by building up the discipline of Family Medicine.

The Vision of the department is to establish a network of well-trained Family Physicians in India who are multi-competent clinicians, equipped to practice person-centred, cost effective and community centred care irrespective of age and gender in the context of their family and community along with promotion of family health.

The objectives include:

  • Promotion of health and prevention of diseases in all the families under his/her care.
  • To coordinate, supervise and utilize the services of community health care workers(Health Inspectors/JPHN/AWW/ASHA /NGO etc), who now are not able to make any output due to lack of trained primary care doctors, to guide them and nurture them.
  • Effective medical management of common diseases in all age groups, in various clinical specialties, within the limited resources of family practice setting.
  • Identification of red flag signs and symptoms in any disease or health problem and their appropriate management or referral to secondary care or tertiary care.
  • Co ordinate care with the specialists, follow up, continuity of care, domiciliary care and palliative care.
  • Awareness and implementation of national health programmes.
  • Ability to care for disadvantaged groups in the community such as the elderly, mentally and physically challenged persons.
  • Application of behavioral sciences related to family practice to develop a healthy relationship inside the family.
  • Effective communication with patients, family, colleagues and other health care workers in the community.
  • Management of a wide range of common medical emergencies in the context of family practice, with evidence-based medicine.
  • Decision making regarding the need for, and the appropriate and cost-effective use of, modern technological investigations and ability to interpret the results of these commonly used investigations.
  • Development of a critical mind and the ability to solve patient problems within a particular socio-cultural setting, harnessing available community services.
  • Being a role model in health behavior and the ability to organize and actively engage in community care programmes, focusing on promoting and maintaining health of the family and the community in general.

1. Letter of consent for starting the Dept. of Family Medicine in Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode by KUHS obtained on 18-11-2010.
2. Letter of Permission for starting PG course in Dept. of Family Medicine was obtained on 31-03-2012 from MCI.
​3. Department was started on June 2012
4. First batch was admitted on 2012 July and passed out in 2015 July.
5. Department infrastructure were inaugurated by Hon. M.P Shri. M.K Raghavan.
6. Course was recognized by MCI w.e.f 2012 on 27 July 2017.

  3. Determinants of health and health seeking behaviour among families in family practice unit
  4. Relationship between lifestyle factors and BMI among school going children in a family practice unit Kozhikode
  5. A comparative study of nutritional status of high school children among different socioeconomic groups
  6. The prevalence of depression among elderly in Kozhikode.
  1. Diagnostic and clinical – Daily O.P service.
  2. Specialty services – Family Health Unit at Nellikkode where OP services were provided twice a week and home visit once in a week.
  3. Providing comprehensive primary care at C.H.C Thalakulathur- once in a week.
  4. Geriatric care services at “madithattu” in collaboration with ULCCS at Vadakara.
  1. Peripheral Family Health Unit at Nellikode, Kozhikode inaugurated on November 2016, where all the families under our care were registered and we have prepared a database of socio demographic profile and morbidity pattern and currently providing ongoing comprehensive health care.
  2. The department of Family Medicine is joining hands with Kerala University of Health Sciences in the Certificate program in Family Health Care.
  3. Conducting regional training for medical officers in health services as a part of Ardrammission.
