The Department of Community Medicine started functioning during the year 1961. Over the years the activities of the department has extended from academic programs for undergraduates to include post graduate teaching programs, and active involvement in implementation of various national programs, outbreak investigations and control of various communicable diseases in the Community. Over the years the department has evolved into a clinical speciality with 2 outpatient clinics running successfully under it. In addition department also has administrative control over the rural health training centre at Cheroopa . Department has always risen to the challenges or epidemics and pandemics as it did during the Nipah outbreak and COVID pandemic. Active participation of faculty , interns and students in the outreach programs and field visits ensures hands on training in public health activities and field programs provide students with real life interactions with the Community.

One of its first kind to start in a Government Medical College in Kerala. Administering Yellow fever vaccine and International Certificate of vaccination is given to those who are travelling to Central America, South America and Africa.
