Community Medicine

Department Details

The Department of Community Medicine started functioning during the year 1961. Over the years the activities of the department has extended from academic programs for undergraduates to include post graduate teaching programs, and active involvement in implementation of various national programs, outbreak investigations and control of various communicable diseases in the Community. Over the years the department has evolved into a clinical speciality with 2 outpatient clinics running successfully under it. In addition department also has administrative control over the rural health training centre at Cheroopa .  Department has always risen to the challenges or epidemics and pandemics as it did during the Nipah outbreak and COVID pandemic. Active participation of faculty , interns and students in the outreach programs and field visits  ensures hands on training in public health activities and field programs provide students with real life interactions with the Community.

  1. PREVENTIVE CLINIC (OP No: 60) : 9am -12 Noon
    Immunization services and antirabies prophylaxis
    OP 9am-12 noon -Functions on all days round the year
    Casualty services provided for animal bite cases 24 x7
    6000 new cases managed annually.
    IDRV introduced since March 2009

  2.  Adult Immunisation & Travel Health Clinic – Mon- Saturday

All adult vaccinations undertaken 

Hepatitis B & A, Varicella, dT,Typhoid etc.

  1. Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre- on All working Tuesdays- 10.00 am- 1.00 pm

One of its first kind to start in a Government Medical College in Kerala. Administering Yellow fever vaccine and International Certificate of vaccination is given to those who are travelling to Central America, South America and Africa.

    OP : 8AM-12 PM ( Monday to Saturday)

Caters to medical needs of local population around Medical College. Management of Common minor ailments and referral services. Around 100 patients attend daily.

    Available in the Department Laboratory from 9am-4pm (All working days)
    600-700 smears examined / year
    Drugs issued as per National Program

  2. REGIONAL PREVENTION OF EPIDEMIC & INFECTIOUS DISEASE CELL
    PEID cell coordinates Disease Surveillance program in the Medical College and assists with epidemic response in North Kerala.

In additionthe students are posted in various public health institutions for sensitization and training. Postgraduates are actively involved in research activities and present research papers in various international, national and state platforms.
