DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE

Emergency Medicine is the medical specialty concerned with caring for undifferentiated and unscheduled patients with illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical, surgical, or psychiatric attention. As first-line care providers, Emergency physicians are responsible for initiating resuscitation & stabilization, starting investigations and interventions to diagnose and treat illnesses in the acute phase, coordinating care with other specialists and determining disposition assessing the patient’s need for hospital admission, observation or discharge.

 

Goals And Objectives

1. To assimilate general concepts of emergency medicine, focused history taking, and physical examination skills to develop a systematic evaluation of patients presenting to the emergency department.
2. Based on the history acquired, develop the ability to do an immediate assessment and initial stabilization, followed by a complete focused examination.
3. To combine the knowledge with the history and physical examination, to develop an appropriate differential diagnosis for all presentations.
4. To demonstrate knowledge of the causes, presentation, and management of commonly presenting emergencies.
5. To perform primary and secondary surveys with the management of polytrauma patients effectively.
6. To demonstrate the ability to perform essential emergency procedures.
7. To be able to differentiate and place patients on care pathways that lead to appropriate discharge with follow-up when needed, admission to an ED-based observation unit or admission into a hospital.
8. To work in the difficult and challenging environment of the Emergency Department and to be able to re-prioritize and respond to new and urgent situations.
9. To be a part of a multi-disciplinary team where good communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
10. To be able to work both within and lead a team to provide the patient’s needs.
11. To work closely with a wide variety of in-patient teams and primary care and pre-hospital clinicians.
12. To be committed to the highest standards of care and of ethical and professional behavior within the specialty of Emergency Medicine and the medical profession.
13. The Emergency Physician should be caring, empathetic, and conscientious and practice medicine without prejudice.
14. To continually seek to improve care by utilizing up-to-date evidence, being committed to lifelong learning and being innovative.

 

Head of Department’s Message

Emergency Medicine is a relatively new specialty in India. Govt Medical College, Kozhikode, is honored and privileged to have the first MCI-recognized MD-Emergency Medicine postgraduate degree course in Kerala in the government sector. At present, we have NMC recognized two M.D seats every year. It has a bright future with many good opportunities for the students after MD Emergency Medicine.

 

History

M.C.I gave the Letter of Permission (No.MCI-68(22)/2011-Med) to start an M.D- Emergency Medicine postgraduate degree course with an annual intake of 2 seats, affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences, Thrissur from the academic year 2012 - 2013

The emergency Department was formally created by pooling faculty from General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics & Anesthesiology.

The first batch of MD-Emergency Medicine candidates successfully completed the course in 2015.

A major milestone in 2017 was to get the MCI recognition for the permitted 2 M.D. seats.

Started one-year training program in Emergency Medicine for qualified Nurses on 1/11/2019 [Emergency Nursing Trainees] with the sanctioned seats of 10 every 6 months.

On 25th March 2023, the Department of Emergency Medicine got shifted to the new PMSSY block with improved facilities.

 

Academics

The department provides training for MBBS degree course, M.D in Emergency Medicine, affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences, with an annual intake of 2 seats, based on NEET PG entrance merit.

The department conducts bedside teaching and training for MBBS students and interns.
The department is actively involved in conducting BLS/ACLS courses for doctors, nursing staff, other department healthcare workers, and residents, including faculty from other departments and institutions.

Trauma Life Support course for residents and faculty from General Surgery and Orthopedics was conducted in various sessions.
Department periodically conducts Pediatric Advanced Life Support course for doctors, nursing staff, and other healthcare workers involved in managing pediatric patients.
Orientation classes including demonstrations for interns, focusing on the approach to a patient in the Emergency Department, triaging, basic airway and life support skills and safe transport of patients were conducted.

 

Curriculum

As per standards laid down by the Kerala University of Health Sciences, Thrissur.

Started monthly “EM TALK” from January 2019 onwards – A platform for eminent faculties for discussing various topics pertaining to Emergency Medicine.

In 2022, to mark the 10-year anniversary of the department, the department also started an online learning session called ‘E-LUMNI TALK’ hosted by the alumni of the Department of Emergency Medicine and other faculty happening once every month.

Emergency Nursing Training Course was started on 1/11/2019 with financial support from the Hospital development society. It aims at training qualified nurses in handling emergencies and critically ill patients. One-year course with an intake of 10 nurses every 6 months, for those who completed their nursing training (B Sc Nursing or GNM).

 Medical Social Workers are posted round the clock as interns/trainees as per the order from DME, who get trained, and are actively involved in patient and caretaker counselling in emergency situations.
